Who We Are Our History

We incorporate active quantitative strategies into our solution set and broaden the range of institutional investors we partner with. By the end of the decade, our clients include Pensions, Non-Profits, Defined Contribution Plans, Insurance Providers, Official Institutions, Consultants, and Financial Advisors.

 In 1993, we revolutionize investing forever by creating the US’s first exchange-traded fund in partnership with the American Stock Exchange. The ETF becomes a democratizing force in investing and opens markets that were previously inaccessible to many investors.

Throughout the decade, we create the US’s first mid-cap ETF, sector ETFs, and Asia ex-Japan’s first ETF.

We continue to innovate, listing ETFs in Europe, Australia, and partnering with the World Gold Council to launch the US’s first gold-backed ETF. In parallel, we launch the Official Institutions Group, a department specializing in serving sovereign wealth funds and central banks, and Managed Volatility strategies, a new risk management tool for clients.

We launch an Investment Solutions Group focused on customizing solutions to clients’ unique portfolios and become an early pioneer of active ETFs through partnerships with Blackstone and DoubleLine. Strategic acquisitions strengthen our capabilities in fundamental equity, active fixed income, OCIO, and alternatives.

In 2017, we introduce the world to Fearless Girl, a sculpture by artist Kristin Visbal, that becomes a global phenomenon symbolizing the strength and power of women in leadership. She remains on Wall Street to this day where she is visited by millions.

We continue to offer more opportunities to our clients through partnerships with Nuveen, Loomis Sayles, Apollo, and Bridgewater, investments in defined contribution and wealth platforms, and an expansion of our voting choice program that offers more investors the power to choose how shares held in the eligible funds and segregated accounts they own are voted.

In 2025, we simplify who we are and what we do by rebranding from State Street Global Advisors to State Street Investment Management.
