Promising Acceleration in Global Growth

Signs of a broad-based global economic upturn, which could support further gains in equity markets, are increasingly apparent. In the US, growth data was weak in the first quarter. But improvement could come from two sectors that have lagged so far in this recovery—housing and business investment.  
 
Outside the US, Europe has seen surprisingly strong economic and market performance as many of the worst political risks that clouded the horizon at the start of the year are starting to fade. Japan has also surprised many observers on the upside. Meanwhile, many emerging markets seem to have bottomed out and are showing signs of renewed strength.
