For nearly a half century, we have drawn from our global scale and market-tested expertise to create original solutions and better outcomes for our clients.
With two centuries of perspective navigating bull markets, bear markets, corrections, and crises, State Street Bank establishes an investment management arm to serve institutional investors, focusing initially on equity index and cash solutions. Our first clients are Financial Institutions and Corporate Pensions.
Our capabilities in indexing and cash capture the attention of a broader set of institutional investors, and our client list grows to include Non-Profits, Insurance Providers, and Official Institutions. To better meet their needs, we expand our offering to active quantitative strategies.
By the end of the decade, we establish client relationships with Public Pensions, Defined Contribution Plans, Financial Advisors, and Consultants, and make plans to expand outside the US to London and Hong Kong.
In 1993, we revolutionize investing forever by creating the US’s first exchange-traded fund, in partnership with the American Stock Exchange. The ETF becomes a democratizing force in investing and opens markets that were previously inaccessible to the majority of investors.
We carry that innovative momentum through the rest of the decade, creating the US’s first mid-cap ETF, sector ETFs, and Asia ex-Japan’s first ETF.
With ETF demand increasing, we continue to set the pace of innovation by listing ETFs in Europe, Australia, and partnering with the World Gold Council to launch the US’s first gold-backed ETF.
In parallel, we establish the Official Institutions Group, a department specializing in serving sovereign wealth funds and central banks, and launch Managed Volatility strategies, a new risk management tool for clients.
Recognizing the evolution of our clients’ needs, we strategically enhance our offering through a series of strategic initiatives, partnerships, and acquisitions. That starts with creating an in-house Investment Solutions Group capable of customizing solutions to clients’ unique portfolios. We also strengthen our fundamental equity and active fixed income capabilities, and add OCIO and alternatives capabilities, through acquisitions of Bank of Ireland Asset Management and GE Asset Management.
Meanwhile, we continue to push the ETF industry forward, now as an early pioneer of active ETFs. In partnership with Blackstone, we launch the first actively managed senior loan ETF, followed by partnering with DoubleLine to develop more active fixed income ETFs.
Lastly, towards the end of the decade, we introduce Wall Street and the world to Fearless Girl, a statue celebrating women taking charge.
As one of the world’s largest asset managers, we continue to use our global scale in ways that benefit our clients. Chief among them: offering better access and more choice.
Partnerships with Nuveen, Loomis Sayles, Apollo, and Bridgewater have done just that, further democratizing investing by creating pathways to new markets. Likewise, the strategic investments we’ve made in defined contribution and wealth platforms have increased access to our solutions and helped simplify client experiences. And an expansion of our voting choice program offers more investors the power to choose how shares held in the eligible funds and segregated accounts they own are voted.
In 2025, we rebranded from State Street Global Advisors to State Street Investment Management reflecting our growth and strategic ambition as the leading partner and provider of innovative investment exposures and tailored solutions for its clients across global markets.
