Our Organization
SSgA Japan conducts its business through two entities: State Street Global Advisors (Japan) Co., Ltd. and State Street Trust and Banking Co., Ltd.

Our Capabilities
9.1 trillion Yen (US$85.9 billion) in combined assets (as of June 30, 2008) under management through State Street Global Advisors (Japan) Co., Ltd. and State Street Trust and Banking Co., Ltd.. SSgA Japan offers strategies spanning numerous asset classes and the full spectrum of risk and return options. Available in passive, enhanced and active management styles, they can be targeted to any benchmark and customized to specific client requirements. We provide our strategies through discretionary and non-discretionary investment management services, and deliver them through publicly and privately placed pooled vehicles and separately managed discretionary investment advisory accounts at SSgA (Japan). In addition, we offer designated trust (shiteitan) and pension trust (nenkin tokkin) accounts at State Street Trust and Banking Co., Ltd. The liberalization of the financial markets, combined with our expertise in technology and experience in markets worldwide, enable SSgA to offer an increasing array of innovative investment management services to Japanese clients.

SSgA is a first-mover in providing investment solutions to the Japanese market:

  • In 2000, SSgA (Japan) received approval for discretionary currency overlay management from the Financial Services Agency (FSA).
  • In 2002, SSgA (Japan) launched the first individual Defined Contribution fund listed in the DC line-up provided by the Postal Services Agency.
  • In 2003, the FSA received State Street Bank & Trust Co.'s (Boston) notification to sell the Diamonds exchange-traded fund (ETF) as a security through brokers in Japan, the first foreign ETF made available to Japanese investors.

For more than a decade, SSgA Japan has worked to meet the diverse needs of its clients in Japan, with the same dedicated expertise we bring to a broad range of global clients. SSgA has the resources and knowledge to assist Japanese clients in executing and monitoring increasingly complicated global investment strategies. Other State Street entities address the needs of these clients and their beneficiaries and shareholders by providing global information, trust and custody, securities lending, performance and analytics, and global trading and research services.

Our History
Since its beginnings more than a decade ago, SSgA Japan has consistently adhered to one mission: meeting the diverse needs of institutional investors in Japan in an increasingly sophisticated financial marketplace.

We have remained dedicated to fulfilling this pledge from the start. This is evidenced by our excellent relationships with some of Japan's leading institutional investors and by our steadily increasing assets under management.

Most telling, however, is the trust and confidence our clients have placed in us over the years. As our client base has grown to include both public and private pensions, financial institutions of various types, and public non-pension institutions, we have expanded our services to meet new and evolving client needs. We remain committed to providing innovative, cost-efficient products and services to our clientele in Japan.

SSgA operates in Japan as the investment management specialists of State Street within State Street Global Advisors (Japan) Co., Ltd.
